Shifts in cultural norms, emerging social movements, communications, and warp speed advancements in technology have further widened this gap in recent decades. It might seem like older and younger generations have never been further apart from each other.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;And then, there\u2019s the holiday season: often filled with joy, but also a sense of pressure, right? It can be such a puzzle, during this time of giving, to figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tisbest.org\/about\/how-it-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the perfect gesture<\/a> for each of our loved ones\u2014especially the younger people in our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Not to worry; we\u2019ve got you.<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine this: What if the holiday season, rather than being yet another stumbling block, offered a doorway? TisBest has done the research, scoped out the landscape, and is here to help you understand a little bit more about what it is that Generation Z wants and how to connect with them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><b>So, who <\/b><b><i>is<\/i><\/b><b> Gen Z?<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start with the basics. Generation Z (Gen Z) spans young people born between 1995 and 2010 (in other words, everyone in your life currently between the ages of 10 and 25 years old). Just like every generation, this is a group that\u2019s comprised of unique individuals who in general share a unique set of perspectives and characteristics that influence how they perceive and interact with the world.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;According to data by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/consumer-packaged-goods\/our-insights\/true-gen-generation-z-and-its-implications-for-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gen Zers share several defining behaviors in common. They:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">value <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individual expression<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over labels.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mobilize for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believe in the power of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dialogue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to bridge differences and make the world a better place.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analytical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pragmatic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in how they relate to institutions.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the Gen Zers in your life are likely looking for ways to express themselves as individuals and support the causes that they\u2019re passionate about\u2014perhaps even to support those causes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a way to <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">express themselves. They also value understanding what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people care about, and look to meaningful conversation as a way of bridging the gap with people who hold perspectives different from their own.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Gen Z Consumes<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the research, Gen Zers are also likely to want their buying choices to line up with their values. Consumption, for them, is a means of self-expression and individual identity. This includes their ethical concerns. Therefore they align with companies that stand for the causes that they themselves believe in, and they expect companies to take stands on specific issues. Their tendency to be highly pragmatic and analytical when it comes to consumption means that they analyze not only <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they consume, but the very act of consumption: in other words, asking \u201cWhat does my consumption say about me as an individual, and how does my consumption impact the world around me?\u201d<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another defining feature of Gen Z is that they are the first-ever generation of \u201ctrue digital natives,\u201d having been exposed to modern digital technology, social networks, and mobile devices from youth. This means that they\u2019re WAY more comfortable with digital platforms and currency than many of the rest of us. Consumption no longer necessarily means physical currency and product. It can also mean ideas, values, individuality, and access.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What does all this mean? How do I relate to <\/b><b><i>my <\/i><\/b><b>Gen Zer?<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does this all add up to\u2014especially for those of us who love our Gen Zers and want to connect with them? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, it might just mean that there are more opportunities to meaningfully relate to one another than appear on the surface.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by asking yourself: Do you care about service? Do you volunteer in your community, or help your neighbors? Are there causes that you\u2019re passionate about now, or were when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were younger? How have these causes helped to shape <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identity?&nbsp;<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s likely that the young people in your life hold causes close to their hearts, too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Try connecting using curiosity-driven dialogue.<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know from the research that dialogue is valued by Gen Z\u2014so, let\u2019s try relating to one another by sharing our unique purposes through open-hearted conversation.<\/span><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next time you\u2019re spending time with one of the young people you love, you might try starting a conversation with something like \u201cI\u2019d love to learn more about what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019re<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passionate about. What are you working toward these days?\u201d Then, listen, with curiosity, as well as an open mind and heart. You may not share the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes\u2014but you\u2019ll likely find commonalities in how passionate you each are about making the world a better place.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Link that dialogue to action!<\/b><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An even more powerful gesture: pair that conversation starter with the gift of purposeful action.
